Declutter Your LIfe

4 Benefits of Decluttering

Though we usually can’t put our finger on why, there seems to be something about an organized space that relaxes and calms us. When an area is organized, decluttered, with everything in its appropriate place, it feels more inviting and appealing to us than a disorganized one. Even the act of decluttering is somewhat soothing and enjoyable, and there’s nothing quite like looking at the “before and after” pictures of a room you’ve cleaned. There’s no doubt that most people find the process of decluttering and the look of organized spaces attractive, what is it about them that makes them so great? There are a few reasons, and those reasons are what we’ll be explaining today.

Organization Helps with Focus

Studies have shown that when there are too many things lying around, our brains get overloaded with stimuli, making it difficult to focus. This straightforward problem has a simple solution: Organization. Our brains are naturally wired to love and appreciate organization and when we find ourselves in an organized space, our brain has fewer papers, trash, and miscellaneous objects to focus on, making it easier to concentrate.

Decluttering Helps with Anxiety

Has your room ever been so incredibly messy that you don’t even know where to begin? Standing in a pile of clothing, used dishes, and other things that seem to always find their way into our bedrooms can be overwhelming and in fact, studies have shown that cluttered spaces promote anxiety. Thankfully, the reverse is true: clean spaces help to calm anxiety. What’s more, the very act of decluttering a space has been shown to help reduce anxiety levels.

Less Stuff = More Organization

This one seems pretty obvious, but it is worth repeating time and time again: The less stuff you have, the more space you’ll have. While it can be hard to let go of things we own, research suggests doing so makes it easier for us to stay organized, in addition to helping with self-confidence and self-efficacy. And the more organized you are, the less time you’ll need to spend looking for things. It’s a win/win!

Cleanliness Is Next To…

Happiness! A recent trend has been to throw out everything that doesn’t make you happy when you look at it. There’s a lot to be said for that—surrounding yourself with items you like best has been shown to make you feel happier overall. When you think about it, it makes sense, as it follows the same logic that choosing friends does. Why spend time with people you don’t like? In a similar fashion, why would you spend time with objects you don’t like?
